Choosing To Move

The Benefits Of Hiring A Small, Local Moving Company

by Elmer Riley

If you're about to move and have decided to hire professionals to help you, then you have a decision to make. Will you choose a larger, national moving company, or will you hire a smaller, local moving company? Hiring a large, national moving company does come with some benefits, but in many cases, you may actually be better off hiring a local moving company. Here are a few of the key benefits you can look forward to if you do choose a smaller, local company to assist with your move.

You can probably meet the exact people who will move your items.

Your things are meaningful and important to you, so it only makes sense that you'd want to know who is going to be handling them. Many large moving companies employ lots of people, and the employees sent out to give you an estimate and set things up initially are often different employees than those who will actually be moving your things. When you work with a small, local moving company, on the other hand, you're more likely to meet the actual folks who will be packing and loading your things. This gives you a chance to ask them questions and converse with you directly. It can also make you feel more assured as the movers are doing their jobs.

You may be able to customize your services more readily.

Many large, national moving companies have specific service lists and fee schedules to adhere to. They do this because it allows them to offer more consistent service across their many locations. The downside is that there may not be much opportunity for you to customize the services you receive. With a smaller, local moving company, you have more control. You can often ask for them to leave certain things behind, use different kinds of boxes, or drive a certain route. You may also be better able to negotiate to do certain moving tasks yourself as a way to keep costs down or simplify things.

They're more likely to know the area well.

A smaller moving company that only operates in your area is more likely to know the area's roads well. This may mean they are better able to avoid bumpy, damaged roads in order to transport your things more easily. They may also be better able to avoid things like low bridges and roads with weight limits, which are not passable with moving trucks.

There are a lot of great, large moving companies out there, but going with a smaller, local company like Local Motion Movers is often the wiser choice for the reasons outlined above.
