Budgeting For A Move: 4 Tips To Manage Your Money

by Elmer Riley

Moving to a new home can be expensive. In addition to actually purchasing a new home, there are a host of other expenses to consider. Planning to budget for your move can help you handle all of the costs associated with your move.

1. Set Up A Temporary Savings Account

Check with your bank to see if you can set up a separate bank account. Having a separate account for your moving expenses can make it easier for you keep your moving money apart from your daily expense money and bill money. As soon as you know you'll be moving for sure, begin putting money into the savings account. This account will be the one you use to pay your local movers and to pay for moving supplies you might need. Be sure that the account is attached to a debit card so you can pay for items without having to transfer the money before you spend it.

2. Compare Estimates

Before you hire a local moving company, talk to a few companies to compare estimates. This will help you get the best deal possible for your move. Be sure to look at the individual services each company will cover, as you may prefer to spend a little bit more to have your movers take care of some tasks you might otherwise have to tackle on your own.

3. Buy Supplies In Bulk

Buying moving supplies in bulk can be a great way to save money, and it also makes it easy to have plenty of supplies on hand for all your moving needs. You can purchase bulk boxes, cushion wrap, and tissue paper, along with other items. If you don't want to buy in built, partner with your moving company to coordinate a discount on supplies purchased through the movers.

4. Have Extra Set Aside

Even if you budget for every possible expense, such as the move, the supplies, and additional moving services, you may find that there are a few unexpected expenses that pop up. This might include having to replace a damaged piece of furniture or having to pay to have holes in your walls repaired from hanging artwork. Determine how much extra you can afford to spare and transfer it into your moving account. After the move is complete, you can determine if any extra money will go toward work on your new home or if it will go back into savings.

Talk to your moving company about additional ways to save on your move. It may offer package deals and other discounts you can use to better budget and afford the cost of moving to a new home. For more information, contact a company like Four Guys & A Truck.
