Keeping Your Pets Stress Free During A Move

by Elmer Riley

Pets get stressed up by changes, so expect your animal friend to get stressed if you are moving. Luckily, it doesn't have to be so because there are measures you can take to keep the animals safe and comfortable. Here are a few examples of these measures:

Pack Gradually

For animals, moving-related stress begins during the packing stage; it isn't related to the actual relocations. Your pet is comfortable in your house, with all its furnishings, smells, and people. This is why it will get stressed when things start to change in the house, for example, when the rugs are removed.

Therefore, ease your pet into the new normal by taking your time with the packing. Instead of waking up one day to pack everything; do it over time (start some days to the moving day) so that they can get used to the changes.

Provide Comfortable Surroundings

On the actual moving day, make sure your pet has comfortable surroundings throughout the move; pamper it even if you don't usually do it. If an animal is to be transported in a carrier, ensure the carrier is lined with a soft material. The carrier shouldn't be too restrictive; the animal should have enough space to move.

Provide Food and Drink

Your pet needs to be well fed and hydrated throughout the move; hunger pangs and thirst will just worsen the stress. Instead of overfeeding the animal before the move and hoping it stays well fed throughout, just feed it at usual and carry some food to give them periodically during the move.

Carry the Animal with You

It might not be possible to eliminate all the stress, but you can reduce it further by having the animal with you during the move. The sight and smell of a familiar soul with go a long way in calming the nerves of your pet. Therefore, have the animal in your backseat instead of giving them to a professional mover.

Give the Animal Time to Get Used to New Home

Lastly, know that the animal will not stop feeling stressful immediately you arrive at your destination. In fact, it can easily get overwhelmed and frightened by the new surroundings and run away. Therefore, even if you normally let the animal play around in the compound, don't do it immediately. Instead, confine the animal to a room as you unpack and make your home livable. You can also take it for small walks around the neighborhood to familiarize with it.

Moving companies typically don't handle pets. However, they can take care of your pet's belongings such as toys, clothing, and housing, among others, so that your animal friend can comfortably move with you. For more information about what to expect, contact Men On The Move
